How to help your child find his or her style!
Kids being accepted by their peers is hugely important in building their self-confidence when they’re young. They want to fit in, and their clothes play a vital part in that. There are a few things to consider when helping your children pick out their own wardrobe. The first of which is going to be the price. This is one thing that doesn’t need to be discussed with your child, but it does need forethought before going to the store.
The main thing you want to keep in mind is what type of clothing looks best on your child. Meaning, which style helps bring out their natural personality. You don’t want to buy plaid themed clothing for instance if they’ve never worn it before. Additionally, plaid clothing is associated with being studious so, even though learning is at the forefront of schooling if your child isn’t overly involved with the studious crowd this type of clothing would not be an acceptable style fit. You want your child to look like the others they associate with as this will help with their confidence at being able to fit in with others.
Bright colors are usually associated with and look better on, people who have outgoing personalities. If your child is naturally quiet and is comfortable with that trait, don’t try to get him or her out of that shell by trying something new. If the child asks however, by all means see how brighter colors will look on them and how they feel about it. Maybe your child wants to branch out by trying to be a different type of person, so the clothes you both choose should help in that “transition” by helping to give them the confidence to do so.
Whether your children tell you or not, they take their clothes terribly seriously. Especially when your child starts entering their teenage years and acceptance is everything. All of the different styles and their reasons aside, you want the clothes to fit well and look like a lot of attention was paid to detail. It may not look “professional”, but if your child starts with this habit early it will lead to more professional looking clothing in the future.

Are you having trouble getting out of the house in the morning with the kids?
For some of us leaving the house to take the kids to school
can be very difficult. Some kids cry, they move very slowly, they refuse to get
dressed, mornings can be the worst time. If you are shaking your head saying, “this
is so me,” Here are some ideas to help you get your day started smoothly. We
hope it works for you!
1. The earlier bed time the better. If waking them up is
hard to do, this means they are NOT getting enough sleep (according to Kidshealth.org).
School aged children should sleep on average of 10-12hrs per night.
2. Parents need sleep too! So mom and dad…get some sleep. If
you are sleep deprived it will be even harder in the mornings with the kids.
3. Night time routine is essential for the mornings. So make sure backpacks, lunches and whatever you need for the morning is prepared the night before.
4. Give yourself extra time in the morning before the kids
wake up. Preferably an hour earlier, have your coffee/tea, breakfast and be ready before you have to deal with any
sort of emotional ups or downs.
5. Helping them get dressed and spending time with them in
the morning helps with morning routines.
6. Allow them to have some choices in the mornings, like when
to use the bathroom. Some kids go as soon as they wake, some go after breakfast.
7. Lastly, working together parents and children really help
make the morning stress a little easier.

Mommy Cooks Corner-Turkey Meatball Surprise!
With picky kids and appetites we want healthy and tasty meals for them. My friend Chrissy has an amazing “Turkey meatball surprise,” she prepares and the kids love it. Hope you love it too!
1 red pepper minced
1 yellow onion minced
3 cloves minced garlic
2 eggs
1/2 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs (or more if too moist)
1 slice wheat bread
1 tablespoon grated cheese
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon parsley
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 bag birds eye frozen mixed vegetables
Dash salt
Dash pepper
1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil for frying
First, cook half the bag of frozen veggies then purée with blender or food processor. This will be "hidden" in the meatball mixture so make sure it's thin!
In a big bowl add turkey meat, minced peppers, onion and garlic. Add all spices and grated cheese, eggs and breadcrumbs
Take one slice of wheat bread and wet it under water, squeeze some water out, it should be wet but not soaked. Break up the wet bread into the meatball mix.
Add veggie purée and all remaining ingredients.
Blend mixture thoroughly with hands. It should bind together well, then form into balls. If not, add more breadcrumb until mix forms soft balls.
Create meatballs as large or small as you like. These freeze beautifully so I make 1" balls
heat oil in a heavy pan, add meatballs turning frequently so they don't stick or burn
Try not to overload the pan or the meatballs may stick to each other or fall apart.
I freeze these in ziplock bags and use as needed. My tip is to use a large zip lock bag and freeze in one layer, If you throw them in they will freeze Into one big ball.
Don't tell your kids these are veggie meatballs, they will never know!!! :)

Did you know tooth decay is one of the leading childhood illnesses?
Here's a great video on keeping our kids smiles bright!
How to pick a Dentist?
A board certified pediatric dentist has two more
years in school and has been trained especially to care for the oral health and unique needs of children.
What should I use to
clean my baby's teeth?
A soft-bristled
toothbrush with a small head, preferably one designed for infants. Brush at
least once a day at bedtime.
When should I take my
child to the dentist for the first check-up?
Your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first
tooth appears or no later than his/her first birthday.
How often does my
child need to see a pediatric dentist?
A check-up every six months is recommended in order prevent
cavities and other dental problems.
When should I start using toothpaste?
Once you bring baby
home clean baby’s gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water. As
soon as the teeth begin to appear, brush twice daily using fluoridated
toothpaste and a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush. Use a tiny amount of
toothpaste to brush the teeth of a child less than 2 years of age. Most young
children do not have the ability to brush their teeth alone, once they learn
how to tie their shoe laces, they will be able to brush effectively. Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Does packing for a family vacation make you crazy??? Here are some tips!!
I can tell you, packing for our family vacation usually
makes me nervous. I’m never really sure how much clothes to pack? what toys to
bring? What kind of entertainment? I usually over pack and hate bringing the
favorite toys fearing losing them. Last
summer, we went on a road trip to Myrtle Beach, I was pleasantly surprised, the
kids were more excited about the cows, horses, and farm land rather than
watching DVD’s or holding a toy. The DVD’s
helped a great deal keeping our sanity. It kept them quiet and put them to
sleep at times. If you’re like me and need a little guidance for the next
family trip, here are some tips I got from my one of my mommy friends, who
seems to make it work each time they travel.
1.
Make a list of what you need! Portable crib for baby, car seat if getting
on a plane, diapers, games, etc.
2.
Each child should have his/her own easy to push
luggage (Preferably with their favorite colors or movie characters) my sons
likes everything “cars.”
3.
Put all spill able items in a bag to check in at
the airport/ do same if you’re going on a road trip. Makes it easier to know
where everything is.
4.
Make a list of easy things to carry on a flight-
like stuffed animals, coloring books for smaller children, video games for
older ones.
5.
Keep a list in each bag with all the items
you packed. Upon check out, you’ll have the list to ensure you didn’t forget
an item at the hotel.
6.
Place essential items in plastic bags- like hand
wipes, any type of meds needed for your trip.
7.
Two outfits per day and extra tops in case of
spills
8.
For dirty clothes. I usually bring the zip lock
large bags. I roll the clothes and put them in the zip lock and pack them in
our luggage on the sides, or you can bring on a separate carry-on for dirty
clothes.
9.
Lastly, bring a small carry on cooler with
snacks your kids like: sliced apples, fruits etc.
*If anyone has other suggestions, please feel
free to comment.

Baby, It’s Hot Outside!
With the heat on the East Coast in the high 90’s, it’s
tempting to keep the kids indoors (If your kids are like mine, they will ask
every 5 minutes to go outside) to keep them from heat exhaustion. Here are some
tips from Healthychildren.org on how to keep you little ones safe and hydrated.
“There are several steps you can take to protect your child
from heat-related illness:
Plan to have a cool, air-conditioned space for your child.
If your home does not have air-conditioning, find a nearby building that does.
Libraries can be a great place for a cool retreat from the heat.
Make sure your child stays hydrated. Encourage her to drink
water regularly, even before she asks for it.
Plan for more time to rest than usual; heat can often make
children feel tired.
When your child is feeling hot, give him a cool bath or
water mist to cool down.
Don’t forget about the effects of sun exposure.
Never leave children in a car or other closed motor vehicle,
especially when temperatures are high. The temperature inside the car can
become much higher than the outside temperature, and can rise to temperatures
that cause death.”

Whiter Clothes, No Chlorine Bleach!
My dilemma lately has been trying to get my kids whites a little whiter without bleach. I tried soaking for a few hours in hot water before starting the wash. After a few washes of no change I went back to bleaching. I found that bleaching has worn out the threads in their whites and find myself buying new whites every few months. While shopping at my local grocery store, I remembered my mom used “Baking soda” to wash our clothes as kids. As I googled baking soda, I found it had many uses to clean and keep clothes fresh. Well, I tried it today and it worked! It whitened without bleaching, while leaving the clothes soft! Lots of power in a little box, definitely a keeper!
Here are the benefits of using baking soda on clothes:
Baking soda has mild alkali qualities-not harsh on clothes
Dirt and grease dissolves very easily and softens clothing
If you have hard water, your clothes will be cleaned more effectively while preventing stain build-up
Add ½ cup baking soda with your detergent to freshen your laundry and help liquid detergents work harder. Use baking soda instead of fabric softener. Add 1/2 cup at the rinse cycle. Add 1/2 cup baking soda (only 1/4 cup for front-loading machines) with the usual amount of bleach to increase whitening power. (If you want to use bleach)
